Forrest Estate is a family owned and operated winery, established in 1990. Dr John Forrest brings a scientist’s love of experimentation and farming heritage to his winemaking, creating wines that are varied and fascinating yet always stay true to the soil. The tasting room and winery are set in landscaped gardens, where you are welcome to bring your own picnic and enjoy tasting some of Marlborough best wines in the sunshine. There are fifteen wines to choose from; games for the kids, and marble sculptures for the grown-ups, created by sculptor-in-residence Timothy Mark. The tasting room offers a warm, friendly experience for all who visit.
John and Brigid are avid cyclists, and sponsor the Graperide (www.graperide.co.nz), a stunning 101km cycle race from Forrest Estate to Picton, across the Queen Charlotte Drive to Havelock, and then home to a grape crushing party at Forrest Estate. Graperide 2007 will be held on 24 March 2007.

Soft and seductive Sauvignon with pure fruit flavours that suggest passion fruit with a red capsicum influence. A delicate and appealing wine with charm and subtlety.

Forrest Estate ‘Doctors’ Riesling’ 2006 |
Auckland Metro Magazine Jan/Feb 2007: Ever the innovator, Dr John Forrest has brought to market a Riesling that sits way below the national alcohol average for wine. At 8.5 per cent (around 60 per cent of the standard Kiwi riesling), it reflects Forrest’s appreciation of some German wines that are typically lower in alcohol as well as the growing awareness of moderate alcohol consumption. That’s not to say this wine from Wairau Valley fruit tastes inferior to fuller-strength styles. It’s aromatic, fresh and floral with a nicely balanced sweetness as companion to an underlying citrus character. At $20 it is ideal for lunchtime enjoyment. |

Forrest Estate Pinot Gris 2006 |
Michael Cooper’s 2007 Buyer’s Guide to NZ Wine: “Grown at four vineyard sites, low-cropped and harvested at 23.4 brix (average), the stylish 2006 vintage (4 star) was hand-picked, tank-fermented and made entirely without oak. Delicious from the start, it’s a full-bodied, smooth and gently sweet (14 grams/litre of residual sugar) wine with a slightly oily texture and deliciously well-balanced pear and spice flavours, ripe and rich.” |
